The Wiener Stadtwerke Group is the leading infrastructure service provider in the greater Vienna area and is consistently advancing the use of green hydrogen. Since 2021, the Group has pursued a clear hydrogen strategy aimed at establishing Vienna as a central hydrogen hub in eastern Austria. Through Wien Energie, Wiener Netze and Wiener Linien, the Group covers the entire value chain – from production, distribution and storage through to end use:
- Wien Energie focuses on production: Its own 3-megawatt electrolysis plant in Vienna-Simmering produces green hydrogen using electricity from renewable sources. Two hydrogen refuelling stations in Simmering and Leopoldau, together with a trailer filling station, make the hydrogen available for various mobility and industrial applications. Wien Energie is also heavily involved in the development of so-called H₂ Valleys – regional clusters that connect production, infrastructure and end use. One example is HyHOPE, a cross-border project involving Austria, Slovakia and Hungary that supports market development and promotes the establishment of an eastern hydrogen corridor. Further initiatives such as H2REAL, ELEVATECEE and HySISI are driving this development at both regional and international level.
- Wiener Netze focuses on infrastructure requirements and on preparing existing networks for new energy carriers such as hydrogen. The company is also testing gas pipelines to assess whether they can be repurposed for transporting
- Wiener Linien brings hydrogen into practical use: Hydrogen-powered buses are already in operation, including on routes 2A and 3A in Vienna’s city centre.
