Wiener Stadtwerke, together with Wien Energie, Wiener Linien and Wiener Netze, are driving the development of a green hydrogen economy across the entire value chain.

  • Wien Energie focuses on production: a 3 MW electrolysis plant in Simmering is already in operation, producing green hydrogen from renewable electricity. Through two hydrogen refuelling stations in Simmering and Leopoldau, as well as a trailer filling station, the hydrogen is made available for a wide range of applications in mobility and industry.

In addition, Wien Energie is strongly committed to the development of so-called H₂ valleys – regional clusters that connect production, infrastructure and usage. One example is HyHOPE, a cross-border project between Austria, Slovakia and Hungary that supports market ramp-up and promotes the development of an Eastern Corridor. Further initiatives such as H2REAL, ELEVATECEE and HySISI are advancing this development at both regional and international levels.

  • Wiener Netze focus on the infrastructural requirements and on adapting existing networks to accommodate new energy carriers such as hydrogen.
  • Wiener Linien are already putting hydrogen into practical use: hydrogen-powered buses are currently operating on routes 2A and 3A in Vienna’s city centre, as well as on route 39A.

Hydrogen is therefore being approached holistically – as the interaction of production, infrastructure and application.
