RAG Austria AG is Austria’s largest energy storage company and one of Europe’s leading technical storage operators. The company’s core business focuses on the storage, conversion, and demand-oriented conditioning of energy in the form of gaseous energy carriers. With its underground storage facilities, RAG provides essential flexibility for an increasingly renewable energy system, thereby sustainably strengthening the security of supply in Austria and Central Europe.

For more than ten years, the company has been developing pioneering projects in seasonal hydrogen storage and, as a trailblazer, commissioned Austria’s first megawatt-scale water electrolysis plant. Based on its own renewable electricity generation, hydrogen is produced, stored underground, and used when needed. Currently, the electrolysis capacity is being expanded to 15 megawatts in order to make long-term use of surplus renewable energy.

Together with industrial partners and academic institutions, RAG is also exploring various possibilities and pathways for methane electrolysis to produce hydrogen and high-purity carbon.
