As part of an energy-intensive industry, LAT Nitrogen faces one of the key challenges of our time: reducing CO₂ emissions. We firmly believe that we must make an active contribution without compromising security of supply or global food security.

We are fully committed to achieving net-zero targets and continuously developing our decarbonisation strategy. Concrete projects are already delivering results: our current initiatives will enable us to reduce our total emissions by approximately 25%. At the same time, we are evaluating further measures to reduce our carbon footprint even more significantly.

Our focus is on innovative technologies and sustainable energy sources. These include the use of electrolysers, heat recovery measures and the reduction of nitrous oxide emissions (N₂O). We are also assessing the use of biomethane as a renewable alternative to fossil-based natural gas. Improving the efficiency of our plants likewise plays a central role, for example through the use of advanced technologies such as Advanced Process Control (APC).

Collaboration as the Key to Success

Decarbonisation is a challenge that can only be successfully addressed through joint efforts. We therefore actively seek partnerships with companies and organisations that contribute complementary expertise. This collaboration enables us to accelerate innovation and implement sustainable solutions efficiently.

Challenges on the Path to Climate Neutrality

The path towards carbon neutrality involves significant challenges. Particularly relevant are the high costs of many low-emission technologies, which require both substantial investment and considerable human resources. At the same time, European industry is under economic pressure, creating the challenge of closing the cost gap between conventional “grey” production and sustainable “green” production.

In technological terms, we are also breaking new ground in many areas. Many of the solutions being considered have not yet been established on an industrial scale. As a result, the demand for skilled professionals and specialised expertise in planning and implementation is increasing.

Another critical factor is the energy supply. The new technologies require large amounts of electricity, which must come from renewable sources. The timely expansion of these capacities is therefore crucial to the success of the transformation.

Why LAT Nitrogen Is Part of HIAA

The Hydrogen Import Alliance Austria (HIAA) plays a central role in establishing a functioning hydrogen economy in Austria. It supports the development of a coordinated overall system across the entire value chain, from procurement and infrastructure through to end use.

One of HIAA’s key objectives is to help establish suitable regulatory conditions and synchronise timelines so that projects along the hydrogen value chain can be implemented efficiently and on time.

LAT Nitrogen is an active part of this value chain. As an energy-intensive company, we recognise the importance of cooperation and coordinated stakeholder management in enabling sustainable hydrogen imports into Austria. Membership of HIAA allows us to contribute our perspective while also benefiting from a strong network.

LAT Nitrogen is a leading European provider of nitrogen-based products for the fertiliser and industrial chemicals sectors. The company was established in 2023 following the acquisition of the fertiliser, technical nitrogen and melamine businesses by the AGROFERT Group.
