The H2 Convention took place for the second time in Linz from 26–28 November 2024. As one of Austria’s most important networking events on the topic of hydrogen, the H2 Convention makes a significant contribution to knowledge transfer in the energy sector. HIAA supported the event as a sponsor and organized several formats focusing on import initiatives in order to discuss the current situation and necessity of imports and to present best-practice examples.

As part of the workshop “Import Initiatives: Connection to the DACH Region, Import Corridors and Development of an International H2 Backbone”, the HIAA companies demonstrated that strategic alliances along the hydrogen value chain are of crucial importance in order to ensure the necessary imports for an economic and large-scale supply of future demand for green hydrogen. On the one hand, possible import corridors were discussed and their promising potential highlighted. On the other hand, the representatives of HIAA addressed the need to position Austria internationally as a reliable hydrogen hub in Europe. Among the more than 30 participants, there was agreement that incentives from the government are needed in order to rapidly and effectively advance the development of national infrastructure.

In the exchange session “Perspectives of H2 Import Initiatives in the DACH Region”, AMAG presented a concrete best-practice example from industry to a selected expert audience on behalf of HIAA: the decarbonization of aluminium production with the help of hydrogen. The participating industry representatives agreed that hydrogen imports will play an essential role in economically meeting the hydrogen demand of Austrian industrial companies in the future.
